Genealogy Poetry of Life, Love and Art

Poetry is a form of literature that gives emotion and the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive styles and rhythms. Think of it as the art of making words into a beautiful painting for the ears.

Poetry can tell short little stories, provide inspiration, give solace in a time of grief and even provide humor.

Here are a few genealogy poems that you might find interesting.

A Genealogy Haiku ~ Taneya Y. Koonce

I love family
Mine, yours – alive, and deceased,
I tell their stories.

Family Reunion Planning

A Family Reunion ~ Author Unknown

A Family Reunion
is a time to remember,
a time to laugh,
a time to celebrate…
a time to share old stories
and make new memories

A time to see each other
and the new faces all around us
and find reflections of ourselves
in the hearts of both young and old.

A reunion is a coming together
that strengthens the bond of family
and reminds us of the gift
of belonging.

A chance to share our history.
A reason to celebrate our past.
A time to welcome our future…
as a family.

Where’s the best place to be
to learn about my genealogy?
In grandma’s lap or grandpa’s knee.
There is no place else I’d rather be
Than dangling from my family tree.

Who Am I? ~ Author Unknown

I started out calming tracing my tree,
to see if I could find the making of me,
And all that I had was Great-Grandfather’s name.
Not knowing his wife or from whence he came.

I chased him across a long line of states,
And came up with pages and pages of dates.
When all put together, it makes me forlorn,
Poor old Great-Grandpa had never been born.

One day I was sure the truth I had found,
Determined to turn this whole thing upside down.
I looked up the record for one Uncle John,
But then I found the old man to be younger than his son.

Then when my hopes were fast growing dim,
I came across records that must have been him.
The facts I collected made me quite sad.
Dear Old Great-Grandfather was never a Dad.

It seems that someone is pulling my leg,
I’m not at all sure I wasn’t hatched from an egg,
After hundreds of dollars I spent on my tree,
I can’t help but wonder if I’m really me!
