As a person conducts genealogy research and learns more about their family history, they may trace themselves right into special groups of people who had an impact on life as we know it today.
We embrace history and those who lived to tell the tale by creating societies or organizations to keep the history alive and teach future generations. Sometimes a lineage society is just a place to belong and be with people who share common historical traits.
Here are a few societies that you may have heard of and some that might be new to you.
We’ve discussed the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) in a few blogs. They hold a special place in American heritage and lineage societies as their prime focus is on preserving and carry on the history of those who fought in the American Revolution.
With the DAR is also the SAR, Sons of the American Revolution. A similar group to the DAR with the focus on preservation and carrying on the history of the American Revolution.
Anyone who can prove their lineage back to a person who fought or participated in the American Revolution can join the DAR (women) or the SAR (men).
Elder William Brewster Society
One of the most important passengers of the Mayflower may have been William Brewster. William served as their leader and pastor during the first years of the Plymouth settlement. He is so important that he has his own lineage society that is made up of people all over the world!
It’s possible that William has over a million descendants. Are you one of them?
In this blog, we introduced you the Mayflower Society which is a lineage group for those descendants of the Mayflower passengers. If you can prove or are already a member of the Mayflower Society and that you descend from William Brewster, applying to the Elder William Brewster Society is easy.
First Families of “Insert State Here”
Do you have families that immigrated and settled in a specific state? Many states have a First Family Society for families who can prove their residency before a specific date.
Check out the links below for more information.
Do any of these lineage societies speak to you for something you may want to apply for membership? Are you a member of a lineage society you’d like to see us mention in a future blog? Tell us about your favorite lineage society in the comments!
